It is impossible to overstate the importance of my Alva deck when I was 11 years old. With ACS-651s and green Kryptonics, that skateboard was my lifeline out of my rural-suburban life as it transported me to the world of the headband-wearing, freak-out pool skaters. Every day after classes I would walk home, get my board, ride back to school and then spend hours performing schoolyard tricks so rudimentary they would not even be recognized as tricks today. Until the Dogtown documentary came out, I didn't realize that our low to the ground, wide sweeping style was the trademark Z-Boys style. My buddies and I were just replicating the moves we saw in Skateboarder magazine.
Rather than buy an expensive original, I am going to assemble a re-issue and visit my grade school to skin my knees anew.
