Might Steampunk Revive Detroit?

I confess that I don"t remember much about Walker Percy's 1971 Post-Apocalyptic novel Love in the Ruins. But the following passage has stayed with me:

Dusty nods vigorously as if my stepping out of the woods with my medical bag was no more or less than he expected. But even as he speaks, his eyes caress the mahogany dashboard and brass knobs and dials. These days it is the fashion to do car interiors in wood and brass like Jules Verne vehicles.

I had figured out at a pretty young age that fashion was re-cyclical, and that indeed someday, the Victorian aesthetic might well rotate back onto the scene.

Well, as we know, the fashion food chain starts with the punks, and Steampunk godfather Jake Von Slatt is working on his steam car as we speak. I know, the Auto industry doesn't take its cues directly from the underground the way the clothing industry does, but give it 10 years.

In the meantime, keep an eye on Jake's project.
