Garage Sale Report - August 16, 2008
"There are some real GOOD pens in there, too!"
I had just completed a $2 purchase of three shoeboxes of miscellaneous pencils, crayons, pens, nail files, un-rubbery rubber bands, dried out highlighters and a few broken swizzle sticks. Having spotted a single Faber Castille Blackwing 602 pencil, I purchased the entire lot to allow for a careful examination to assure another Blackwing was not overlooked.
Since I was buying the whole lot just for the one true pencil of diplomats, crossword junkies and poet laureates, I believe I snorted when the seller made the "real good pens" comment. But, I'll be dipped if she wasn't correct. I can't quite say what is so appealing about the Esterbrook All-Purpose Markers, but it is refreshing to see a product look exactly as it should. The chisel points are still sharp, the nibs are wet, and uncapping the pens offers an immediate olfactory bitch slap that would take even Proust back to the final row of a junior high school bus.
Clearly, it is missing some of the business end of the writing instrument and that blue die is so melted it appears to be made of butter, and is so loaded as to only fool the most simple of the town rubes. Marked Styza's Birchwood Lodge, we learn with a little Googling that although Styza's is renamed, it is still a going Northern Wisconsin concern.
I love Yahtzee on screened porches with gin and tonics and lightning bugs.
