Anesthesia and Surgery for Children Illos

During an image search for what I can no longer recall, I was distracted by these simple, beautiful illustrations accompanying an article on anesthesia and surgery for children. But on closer inspection, there's something a bit strange about them- I'm not sure what it is. For one, they appear to originate from an older text (mid-to-late 60's?), but there's no information given. The subject matter makes them a bit odd for sure, but the treatment seems off. Like this little girl listening with rapt, almost amorous attention to the anesthesiologist as if he's reciting her favorite bedtime story.

Hoping for more illos from this mysterious source, I clicked an accompanying link on hernias and was disappointed with, uh, far less elegant artwork.
