Mutoscope Voice-O-Graph Coin Operated Recording Booth
D+R reader Aimee asks if we know the location of any coin operated recording studios that would allow you to cut your album. Aimee, we do not. Anybody out there know of one that is operable and public accessible?
From time to time, I do find the records that were cut on the old machines. Mostly, they are audio letters that begin rushed and anxious only to end bored and looking for something to say. It turns out a 5 minute one sided conversation is pretty long.
Also, from time to time, we will come across a home vinyl recording machine like the Silvertone shown above. I am often tempted to buy one to record a weekly radio address for broadcast over a pirate FM transmitter but, somehow, I have never found the bravery/time to nurse one of these antiques back into operation.
